Thank you for your interest in volunteering with District Alliance for Safe Housing! Volunteers play a vital role in furthering the mission of DASH, to provide safe housing to survivors of domestic violence. At DASH we work hard to ensure that all programming is based off of the real, expressed needs of our residents. Across the board our main priority is the safety and well being of the families we serve.
All volunteering takes place at our main offices and housing facility – to inquire about exact location please email us. Please note that if you have a specific passion or skill that you would like to utilize in volunteering at DASH (photo editing, website maintenance, videography, yoga, zumba, etc), please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 202-462-3274 ext. 101
Volunteering as an Individual
Mondays: 5-8pm – September to May
Work one-on-one with a DASH child or resident every Monday night for an hour. Tutors help with language support, GED practice and after school homework. We are not looking for experts, just enthusiastic, committed individuals. All tutors must be able to commit to the full September- May tutoring season. For more information see the Tutor Position Description.
Tuesdays: 6-7:30pm – Yearlong Commitment
Anne Marie and Beth of the Arcade lead the weekly Children’s Art Group. This is one of the kid’s favorite programs where they are able to unleash their creativity by painting, making masks and creating Andy Warhol inspired art. Volunteers engage the children, help maintain the peace and create their own art. For more information see the Art Group Volunteer Position Description.
Front Desk Volunteer
Flexible schedule – 6 Month Commitment
DASH is always in need of reliable front desk volunteers responsible for buzzing in residents, signing in guests and answering the phone in the evenings when there are fewer staff. For more information see the Front Desk Volunteer Position Description.
Become a DASH Ambassador! Plan Happy Hours, host fundraisers and drives and engage in tabling. This is a great way to support DASH as an organization. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals willing to utilize their networks and organizational skills to further the DASH mission in the community. For more information see the Community Advocate Position Description.
Next Steps for Individuals: If any of these opportunities interest you, please fill out our volunteer application and we will contact you. All volunteers must be trained and undergo a background check ($20) before working with us.
Volunteering as a Group
DASH Family Movie Night
The last Friday of every month DASH hosts a family movie night for DASH residents and staff. Sponsoring a movie night includes providing a movie, bringing movie snacks and watching the film with us! Check out this list of movies we have watched recently. Email Jasmine at Jowens@dashdc.org to sign up.
Host a Drive
Host a drive at your apartment, workplace or among your family and friends. This is a great way to support DASH residents while engaging your community. Check out our wish list for more information or email Jasmine at JOwens@dashdc.org.
There are limited opportunities to engage in one time projects at DASH such as an art activity, a DASH beautification day or a holiday themed project. If you or your organization has a specific skill or passion it’s possible to create a specific volunteer opportunity. Please email Jasmine at Jowens@dashdc.org for more information.
